SCADA & Industrial Automation

From PLC and MCU to dashboard — one engineering team.

An open panel with wireless I/O and PLC, a SCADA screen and an RF link to a remote tank.

Overview

The problem in the field. In most plants, data lives in three places: inside the PLC, in the operator's notebook and at remote points where it is never collected (wells, tanks, pumping stations, valves). Running cable means digging and permits; each supplier is responsible only for its own part; when the PLC, HMI and reporting come from different companies, integration errors belong to no one. In older plants, machines without a PLC stay outside monitoring.

The Elmes solution. We start with a survey: the I/O list, the existing PLC/panel inventory, communication options and remote points are mapped. The architecture is built by a single team: a PLC or Elmes controller + SCADA/HMI at the center; wireless I/O (Wireless Well & Tank Control System, Wireless Analog & Digital Data Transmitter) and the Wireless Gateway / RTU at remote points; history, alarms, reports and, where needed, an ERP bridge on top. Wired and wireless field devices work side by side; wireless nodes go to a defined safe state on communication loss.

The result. One responsible party, one documentation set, one support line. Because the hardware is an Elmes product, firmware and spare-part access is faster when something fails in the field. The PLC program and SCADA project are handed over to the customer; no lock-in is created.

Features

  • Mixed wired + wireless field: PLC I/O and Elmes wireless nodes in one SCADA within the same project; the nodes appear as Modbus registers via the Wireless Gateway / RTU.
  • Monitoring for machines without a PLC: signal acquisition with the IIoT Retrofit Kit, without dismantling the existing machine.
  • Custom controller option: where a standard PLC is too costly or falls short, an embedded control board based on the Elmes OEM Device Control Platform (through contract development).
  • Communication protocols: integration over Modbus RTU/TCP, OPC-UA and MQTT.
  • Historian & reporting: shift/daily reports and alarm history.
  • User permission management: operator/maintenance/manager roles through the SCADA platform's role-based access control (RBAC).
  • Safe state on communication loss: wireless nodes go to a safe state after a defined timeout; the PLC keeps its local interlocks and SCADA raises an alarm.
  • TargetCloud monitoring layer: history and alarms monitored from the cloud with Telemetry & Process Intelligence.
  • TargetHot standby: redundant server architecture; a project option, not part of the standard delivery.
  • TargetAI predictive maintenance module: the second layer of Telemetry & Process Intelligence, using VibroBal data.

Service scope

Indicative durations and pricing depend on project scope; final figures are set in the quotation.

Compliance & documentation

Contract. A fixed-scope project contract (with a statement of work) or a man-day framework agreement; maintenance under a separate SLA annex. A mutual non-disclosure agreement (NDA) is signed on request; process data and drawings are treated as confidential.

Intellectual property. Project files (PLC program, SCADA project, panel drawings) pass to the customer after payment; Elmes's general-purpose library and framework code (gateway firmware, drivers) stays with Elmes and the customer receives a usage license.

  • EN 61439 series — panel manufacturing
Conformity is the panel builder's responsibility; design and acceptance by Elmes.
    Self-declared
  • IEC 62443 certification
Network segmentation, access control and update principles are followed in the design.
    Out of scope
  • CE / RED — Elmes wireless products

Frequently asked questions

Do we have to replace our existing PLC and SCADA?

No. The survey maps the existing system inventory; wherever possible the existing PLC/SCADA is kept and the missing points are added.

How do you connect remote points where cable can't be run?

With Elmes wireless I/O nodes (Wireless Well & Tank Control System, Wireless Analog & Digital Data Transmitter) and the Wireless Gateway / RTU. The nodes appear in SCADA as Modbus registers; range is verified in a site pre-test.

Which PLC brands do you work with?

We are brand-independent. The quote uses the customer's existing brand or whichever suits the project; communication runs over Modbus/OPC-UA.

What does the field do if communication is lost?

A wireless node goes to a safe state after a defined timeout; the PLC keeps its local interlocks; SCADA raises an alarm. The behavior is defined per project and tested during SAT.

Can data be shared with our ERP?

Yes; SQL, REST or file-based bridge options are available. The interface on the ERP side is defined together with the customer/ERP vendor.

Do we keep the project files?

Yes. The PLC program, SCADA project and drawings are handed over in the as-built package. Elmes's general framework code (gateway firmware, drivers) is used under license.

Do you provide remote support?

Yes, over VPN. On-site response times depend on the maintenance package.

We are a small plant and want to monitor a single point.

A minimum package of gateway plus cloud monitoring (Wireless Gateway / RTU + Telemetry & Process Intelligence) is planned for single-point monitoring. The initial discovery call is free; a detailed survey is a fixed-fee job.
